Defining the Roman Empire

Defining the Roman Empire

Art was an aspect of the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire was greatly influenced by Greek art. The piece selected is the Venus (Roman Copy) after Aphrodite of Cnidus, goddess of love done by Praxiteles in the fourth (4th) century B.C.E.  It is nude, life sized and had pierced ears. Romans and Greeks had similar thought that sculptures were lifelike and could come alive and stories are told of some sculptures being chained to bases to hinder them from walking away.

This piece of work explains the Roman Empire in terms of the level of influence the Greeks had on it. It is a copy of a Greek goddess Aphrodite, which the Romans copied as their version Venus.

This piece of work is similar to other works of that time, in terms of the strong Greek influence. The Roman Empire has equivalent and copies not only to Aphrodite but to other Greek gods as well. The Roman Empire also imported many Greek sculptures. In addition they may have been influenced by the work of Greek slaves who contributed to development of Roman Art by being in their society.
